ABSTRACT:
A method for dehydrating aluminum chloride hexahydrate which comprises contacting the hexahydrate with a melt consisting essentially of a chlorobasic mixture of aluminum chloride and alkali metal chloride and then treating the resulting mixture with HCl to form an AlCl.sub.3 /alkali metal chloride melt enriched in AlCl.sub.3. NaCl is a preferred alkali metal chloride.
