ABSTRACT:
A data input device includes a pair of resistive sheets positioned so as to overlap one another to define a common writing area. These sheets are separated from one another by a layer of material that is only electrically conductive under pressure. An energizing voltage is alternatively applied to each sheet such that the pressure of a stylus or the like at a contact point on the surface of the writing area generates first and second output voltages representative of the X and Y coordinates of the contact point. A circuit periodically biases one of the resistive sheets. The bias circuit causes an overvoltage outside of the normal range of voltages to be generated on this resistive sheet when no electrical contact presently exits between the two resistive sheets, indicating that a stylus is not presently applying pressure to a contact point on the surface of the data input device. This circuit also causes a voltage within the normal range of voltages to be generated on the biased resistive sheet when an electrical contact does exist between the two resistive sheets. Another circuit detects the overvoltage and causes the bias to be maintained on the resistive sheet until a subsequent stylus contact point is created. The first and second output voltages obtained during or just before a stylus-up state are not output.
