ABSTRACT:
A rotary cutter for gouging out coal or rock from mine faces has a frustoconical wall whose periphery is provided with alternating helical threads and grooves. The threads carry bits which penetrate into the material of a mine face in response to rotation and simultaneous forward movement of the support whereby the removed fragments enter and flow in the adjacent grooves toward the rear end of the cutter. The flow of such fragments in the grooves is promoted by configurating the support and its threads in such a way that the grooves are bounded by surfaces having a substantially U-shaped outline without any dead corners which would allow for or cause the accumulation and stagnation of fragments of removed material.
