A water insoluble crosslinked poly .beta.-alanine is prepared by crosslinking poly .beta.-alanine with a crosslinking agent selected from the group consisting of formaldehyde and a dialdehyde or by irradiation of said poly .beta.-alanine with Co.sup.60.
