The use of substituted .alpha.-methylstyrene derivatives of the formula I, ##STR1## where the variables have the following meanings: R.sup.1 C.sub.4 -C.sub.10 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkylamino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -dialkylamino, substituents which confer solubility in water and which are selected from the group consisting of carboxylate, sulfonate or ammonium residues;
