ABSTRACT:
The method of modifying latex paints for maintenance paint applications, primarily on iron or steel industrial and transportation structures, in order to provide both short term and long term corrosion resistance, and the resulting composition, are described. Two types of corrosion encountered in painting ferrous surfaces with latex paint are: (1) flash rusting which occurs as a result of contact with the water from the latex and results in rust bleed-through at the time the paint is drying, and (2) rust bleeding, which may occur over a period of months or years. It has now been found that the benefits of both water soluble corrosion inhibitors, for preventing flash rusting, and water insoluble corrosion inhibitors, for minimizing blistering and rust bleeding, are achieved by utilizing a soluble complex of a polyvalent metal, a volatile complexing agent, and a corrosion inhibiting anion. This complex may be represented by the formula
