ABSTRACT:
A portable bar code symbol reading system for desktop use includes a hand-graspable housing that has a viewing aperture and a light-transmission aperture through which light can exit and enter the housing. A bar code symbol reader is included in the housing as is a laser and a scanner to scan the visible beam produced by the laser across a scan field and the bar code symbol. The laser light deflected off the bar code symbol produces scan data indicative of the detected light intensity. That scan data is processed in the housing to detect the bar code symbol and to automatically generate an activation signal. A programmed microprocessor also contained in the housing processes the scan data in response to the activation signal to decode the detected bar code symbol and to produce symbol character data representative of the decoded bar code symbol.
