ABSTRACT:
An optical fiber communications network using a star coupler to broadcast a selected transmission received on incoming channels from one of a number of stations, over an equal number of outgoing channels to all of the stations. Each station with a message packet to send begins transmitting and continues to transmit the packet repetitively until sensing the same packet being broadcast on the outgoing channels from the star coupler. A selection device monitors all of the incoming channels, registers and queues all new transmissions on the channels, and, when the star coupler is free, selects one incoming channel for broadcast of its message through the star coupler. All messages are in this manner effectively queued, and the maximum network transmission delay is a relatively low and bounded quantity. A highly efficient time-slotted version is disclosed, in which transmission must begin at the start of designated time slots, as well as an unslotted version. A hierarchical version including multiple star couplers and selection devices is also disclosed, to handle a relatively large number of stations. The network can also be adapted to handle continuous-traffic stations.
