ABSTRACT:
A support actuator20comprises an electro-magnet21having an input current22, provided through a current controller23, and which is arranged to generate a magnetic field24having a variable intensity proportional to a variable current25supplied by the controller23. The intensity of the field24is controlled to ensure that the magnet21is separated from a support armature26arranged to carry a load by an operational gap27.A load cell28is connected between the armature26and a mounting position29for the armature26. The cell28produces a control signal30representing variations in force generated by the magnetic field24which acts on the load, and the signal30is fed backward, along a feedback control path31to the controller23so as to control the variable current25such that it is made substantially equal to a gain demand force D.
