A media transportation mechanism control method and a media processing device can accurately detect the last disc or other media stored in a media storage unit. A transportation arm36is lowered to the media stacker21, the transportation arm36is paused when the media detection mechanism200detects the media, and the transportation arm36is then raised and the position where the media detection mechanism200stops detecting the media is stored as media height H. After the transportation arm36descends again, picks a disc M from the media stacker21, and then rises, the media height H is compared with a prescribed threshold limit α. If the media height H is less than the threshold limit α, the number of media left in the media stacker21is determined to be a prescribed count (such as zero).
