A media-handling system includes a printer having an output that is variable among a variety of different speeds. A first accessory device has an input that is coupled to receive media from the output of the printer. The first accessory device is configured to communicate an associated input speed to the printer. The printer may also have an input that is variable among a variety of different speeds. The printer includes a print engine that is capable of communicating with other devices coupled to the printer.
