ABSTRACT:
An implantable defibrillator includes a waveform generator having a metal housing for the generator electronics. The housing is used as one of the electrodes for cardioversion and defibrillation of the chambers of the patient's heart. An electrically conductive pouch having an effective electrical surface area considerably larger than its geometric surface area is constructed to receive and partially surround the generator, and to make electrical connection with its metal housing to enhance the conductivity of the housing as an electrode. An extension lead is electrically connected to the pouch to further enhance the electric field established during defibrillation.
