ABSTRACT:
Well bore drill string shock absorber device for absorbing drill bit vibratory displacement shock, contemplating a pair of slidably, e.g. telescopingly, associated longitudinal elements, one of which is connectable to a drill string therabove and the other of which is connectable to a drill bit therebelow, such elements being interengageably interconnected for common rotation about a longitudinal, e.g. well bore, axis and for selectively limited relative reciprocal displacement longitudinally with respect to each other along such axis, and such elements together defining a shock absorber work chamber within longitudinal confinement wall portions thereof, e.g. an annular cylindrical chamber, of varying selective maximum and minimum operative longitudinal dimension and corresponding volume in dependence upon such displacement of the elements and in turn of such wall portions, and temporarily internally compressible and resilient shock absorbing means, e.g. an elastomeric material such as silicone rubber, of self-sustaining selective three dimensional perimetric shape, disposed between such confinement wall portions in lateral abutting contact with at least a portion of the longitudinal extent of at least one of such wall portions, and preferably having a normal volume confined within and occupying substantially completely the interior of the work chamber at maximum longitudinal dimension and corresponding volume, and operatively arranged with respect to such elements so as to be placed under dynamic longitudinal stress corresponding to vibratory drill bit displacement shock upon such displacement of the elements, and being capable of supportively absorbing strain in internal direction and within the confines of its three dimensional perimetric shape to reduce its normal volume and concordantly increase its density without expansion or deformation in external direction outside the confines of its said shape when placed under pressure, i.e. load, and of returning to its original volume when such pressure is released.
