The composition comprises a compound of the following formula (1) that exhibits a smectic liquid-crystal phase.in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?R1—(Ar1)p—C≡C—(Ar2)m—C≡C—(Ar3)n—R2  (1)in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?wherein R1and R2represent alkyl; R3, R4, R5and R6represent hydrogen or alkyl; Ar1, Ar2and Ar3represent divalent aromatic hydrocarbon or aromatic heterocyclic group; and p, m and n are 1 or 2.
