ABSTRACT:
Compounds having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is alkyl or alkenyl containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms, X is S, SO or SO.sub.2, and R.sub.2 and R.sub.3, which can be the same or different, are hydrogen, alkyl containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms, oxyalkylene containing 1 to 20 units of ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, 2-sulfoethyl or a salt thereof, or 2-carboxyethyl or a salt thereof, are incorporated, as a preservative or anti-microbial agent in compositions that are subject to deterioration by the action of micro-organisms, excluding foods and medicines.
