ABSTRACT:
Compositions for diagnosis of gastrointestinal disorders comprising urea, a bactericide, an indicator having a pK.sub.a of from about 6.5 to about 8.5, and water, wherein the composition has a pH of from about 5.0 to about 6.5 and wherein the pH is at least about one pH unit lower than the pK.sub.a of the indicator. Preferably the compositions contain a gelling agent, such as agar. Also preferably the composition contain a buffer. The invention also provides methods for diagnosis of gastrointestinal disorders in a human or lower animal subject, comprising the steps of obtaining a sample of gastric material from the subject, contacting the sample with a composition of this invention, and observing any color change, wherein a color change indicates the presence of a gastrointestinal disorder. Also provided are devices for use in diagnosis of gastrointestinal disorders.
