Washing and foaming composition for inducing and stimulating the growth of hair and/or retarding its loss, characterized in that it contains, in a physiologically acceptable medium, at least one amphoteric surface-active agent chosen from the amphocarboxyglycinates of formula: ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 may denote an alkyl radical derived from copra, or a heptyl, nonyl or undecyl radical; and the amphocarboxypropionates corresponding to the formula: ##STR2## in which n=1 or 2,
