The image scanner101comprises a manuscript conveying unit102having conveying rolls115, 116for conveying a manuscript111and a first light source114, and a manuscript reading unit103mounted on the manuscript conveying unit102. The manuscript reading unit103detects movement of the manuscript111in the sub-scanning direction118by a rotation detecting roll122driven by the conveying roll115. When the manuscript111is a reflection-type one, only a second light source124is switched ON to read the manuscript111. When the manuscript111is a transmission-type one, only the first light source114is switched ON to read the manuscript111. The image scanner101does not have a fixed platen. One-dimensional CCD131is fixed. The image scanner101can therefore be small in size.
