BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to a communication terminal having a predictive editor application for entering and editing data. Such a terminal can be a cellular or cordless phone or a communicator. The editor is used for editing text for message handling, phonebook editing and searching etc.
Tegic Communications, Inc has developed an intelligent software protocol that allows the users to enter ambiguous key strokes into an electronic device. The predictive editor program, named T9®, automatically determines from all the possible matches, the intended word. The predictive editor program matches entered keystrokes with completed words from a linguistic database. This concept is subject for U.S. Pat. No. 5,818,437 and WO 98/33111.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
An object of the invention is to provide a communication terminal using the predictive editor program allowing the user in an easy way to also handle compound words. In some languages the user is allowed to define this kind of word and therefore only fragments of a compound word must be expected to be present in the linguistic database of the predictive editor program.
This object is achieved by a communication terminal having a display; a keypad having a plurality of keys associated with several letters each; processor means controlling the display means in accordance with the operation of the keypad; a selectively activatable predictive editor program for generating an output containing word matching a received string of ambiguous key strokes; an editor application controlled by the processor means for editing a text based on the predictive editor programs interpretation of key strokes, and said editor application comprises means for storing string of entered words, means for storing a sequence of key stokes, said sequence is updated upon the occurrence of a new key stroke, and being used as input to the predictive editor program, means for storing a list of matching words received from said predictive editor program. The processor means combines the text string and one word from the list of matching words for displaying in the display of at least a part of said text string and one word from the list of matching words, said one word from the list of matching words is marked in comparison to the remaining part of the text string and added to the text string upon acknowledgement by the user. The terminal has acknowledging means including a key on the keypad indicating that a word suggested by said predictive editor program is a part of a compound word, said editor application fixes the suggested word as an acknowledged part of the compound word, resets said sequence of key stokes serving as input for said predictive editor program in order to determine another part of the compound word independently of the acknowlegded part of the compound word. Hereby long compound words can be entered in segments similar to the normal way of entering a word using a predictive editor program.
Advantageously the processor controls the editor application add a flag to the position of the partial fixing of the compound word, said flag is used later on if wrapping of the compound word is needed when displaying. Absurd wrapping of long compound words is hereby avoided.
