ABSTRACT:
A method for combusting a fossil material so as to produce an exhaust stream having a low level of pollutants. The fossil material is introduced into a fluidized bed combustor which is operated at a temperature of at least approximately 1775.degree. F. to produce a partially cleansed exhaust stream having a low level of N.sub.2 O. SO.sub.2 is removed from the partially cleansed exhaust stream outside of the fluidized bed combustor to produce a cleansed exhaust stream having a low level of SO.sub.2. An apparatus is provided for performing the method of the invention.
