ABSTRACT:
Apparatus and method are claimed for determining the oxygen and combustible element concentration in a sample gas. In the preferred embodiment the sensor includes an analyzing block with conduits for separately routing a sample gas past a combustible element analyzer and an oxygen analyzer. The oxygen analyzer utilizes a voltaic reaction in a solid electrolyte to correlate the oxygen concentration to the voltage produced by the voltaic reaction. The combustible analyzer induces an exothermic reaction in the region of a thermopile to produce a voltage difference along the length of the thermopile bearing a functional relationship to the concentration of a combustible element in the exothermic reaction. The conduit for routing the gas past the combustible element analyzer includes a heating labyrinth for raising the temperature of the sample and a port for accessing air to be mixed with the sample. Also included in this combustible analyzer conduit is a pressure sensing device for maintaining proper calibration regardless of sample flow rate. The flow within the block is maintained by an aspirator operated by a pressure regulated compressed air source.
