ABSTRACT:
Improvements in a colon catheter for removing waste colon material, said catheter of the type having a hollow main tube insertable into the anal opening and held therein by an inflatable member located within the anal opening and limiting elements located outside of the anal opening and extending fore and aft from the main tube. The limiting elements may be formed as flat straps extending fore and aft from the main tube. The lower end of the catheter may be flared outwardly to form a widened exterior which forms the limiting elements and/or a widened lower interior. An irrigation tube or the like may be provided for directing enema fluid into the rectum above the inserted catheter. Obturator devices may be designed especailly for use with the catheter including structure thereon to limit insertion and/or to secure the obturator in place. The obturator may also include a passage therethrough for administering enema fluid, in which the means for securing the obturator in place would resist expulsion of the obturator by the pressures built up in the anal canal by the injected enema fluid. A body strap retention device may be provided for securing the catheter in place, which strap retention device can be formed as an extension of the limiting elements. A collecton bag is formed integrally with or removably connected to the lower end of the catheter to collect waste material. This bag may be attached to the catheter with an obturator and/or enema fluid therein (or with means for inserting enema fluid therein) for cooperation with either or both of these elements for insertion of the obturator and/or injection of enema fluid. Alternatively, the bag and obturator may be separate and can be changed when the bag is full.
