ABSTRACT:
Fiber containing devices for eliminating mist and/or particulate matter from flue gases may become plugged with carbonaceous and/or inorganic deposits or particulate matter. Cleaning of such mist eliminators to remove the plugging deposits is accomplished by the present invention by employing a two-step cleaning process. The process involves soaking the plugged fiber beds of the mist eliminator in hot acidified potassium permanganate (KMnO.sub.4) followed by treating the beds with gaseous sulfur dioxide.
