Detergent compositions comprising surfactants, optional builders, and zwitterionic co-surfactants of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are hydrocarbon groups, n is 1 to 20, M is nitrogen or phosphorus, and X is, for example, sulfate or sulfonate.
