ABSTRACT:
A chipping canter is provided for producing four-sided cants from curved logs. It allows the slabbing heads thereof to follow the natural curvature of the logs for obtaining cants having a maximum cross-sectional area and length. Each log is flatly disposed on a log deck and is scanned at the entry for obtaining information about the curvature and dimensions thereof, and then calculating the position of the log deck and of the centering rollers. As the log is forwarded along the path in the chipping canter, the log is always properly aligned with respect to the slabbing heads.
