The present invention relates to a method for inducing male sterility in plants which comprises treating seeds of a plant receptive to said treatment by application of an effective amount of a compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R and R.sup.1 are hydrogen, alkyl, alkenl, alkynl, allyl, aryl, halogen or boron and may be the same or different;
