There is provided a new and useful paper chemical agent detector comprising a paper base including, associated with the base, at least one dye chosen from 4-((4-(phenylazo)phenyl)azo)-phenol (D.Y. 23), p-ethoxypenyl-azo-.alpha.-hydroxynaphthoic acid (PEN), or 3', 3", 5', 5"-tetrabromophenolphthalein ethyl ester (TBPE).
