ABSTRACT:
There is provided a process for chelating non-alkali metal ions comprising contacting said metal ions with a phosphorus chelating compound having a formula selected from the group consisting of: ##STR1## WHERE R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkali metal and ammonium, X is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, chloroalkyl, chloroaryl, and halogen of atomic weight 35 to 80, Y is selected from the group consisting of hydroxyl, phenyl and halogen of atomic weight 35 to 80 and Z is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, phenyl and halogen of atomic weight 35 to 80.
