ABSTRACT:
A mechanical chain tensioner for automotive engine timing drives. This invention relates to a tensioner that must be packaged in a confined space and having limited access for installation. This tensioner with a shoe and spring is the last timing component to be installed and fastened to the engine using a shoulder bolt, and this is done after its support bracket, if used, and the timing chain and sprockets are already in place. In addition, the tensioner includes a retaining feature that assures the spring will remain within the shoe during shipping, installation, and use of the tensioner.
