ABSTRACT:
A rigid disk substrate for a magnetic recording disk is formed of a ceramic-metal matrix composite. The ceramic-metal matrix composite has a composition ranging from approximately 1 to 40 weight % of ceramic material and 60 to 99 weight % of aluminum or aluminum alloy metal matrix. The ceramic material may be silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, boron carbide, magnesium oxide, silicon oxide, silicon nitride, zirconium oxide, beryllium oxide, titanium boride, titanium carbide, tungsten carbide, or combinations thereof.
