ABSTRACT:
Disclosed is a method of electolyzing aqueous solutions of alkali metal chlorides, such as sodium chloride brine, where an electrical current is passed from an anode to the cathode, evolving chlorine at the anode and hydrogen at the cathode. According to the disclosed method the cathode has a ferrous substrate with an electroplated coating thereon containing a transition metal. Also disclosed is a method of electroplating the transition metal onto the ferrous cathode substrate from an electroless plating solution.
