A process for preparing acrylonitrile comprising feeding propylene, ammonia and oxygen at ratios between 1/0.7/1 and 1/1.4/3 and at temperatures between 350.degree. C. and 550.degree. C., at pressures between 1 atm. and 5 atm. over a catalyst consisting essentially of one having the general formula:
