ABSTRACT:
An apparatus and method for reducing NO.sub.x pollution in flue gas produced by a power plant uses heat exchanger elements having extended surfaces which contain a SCR catalyst, with the heat exchanger elements located in the flue gas stream. Coolant is passed through the heat exchanger elements to cool the catalyst, with a temperature control system used to maintain the catalyst at its optimum temperature such that the maximum conversion of NO.sub.x is achieved. Utilizing the present invention, temperature cycling of the catalyst is avoided, prolonging the life of the catalyst, while at the same time optimizing the efficiency of conversion regardless of variations in the flue gas flow or temperature.
