A gasification power plant10includes a compressor32producing a compressed air flow36,an air separation unit22producing a nitrogen flow44,a gasifier14producing a primary fuel flow28and a secondary fuel source60providing a secondary fuel flow62The plant also includes a catalytic combustor12combining the nitrogen flow and a combustor portion38of the compressed air flow to form a diluted air flow39and combining at least one of the primary fuel flow and secondary fuel flow and a mixer portion78of the diluted air flow to produce a combustible mixture80.A catalytic element64of the combustor12separately receives the combustible mixture and a backside cooling portion84of the diluted air flow and allows the mixture and the heated flow to produce a hot combustion gas46provided to a turbine48.When fueled with the secondary fuel flow, nitrogen is not combined with the combustor portion.
