ABSTRACT:
A gaseous (C.sub.1 to C.sub.4) hydrocarbon mixture having a high methane content (at least 80 percent by volume on a carbon dioxide-free basis) is obtained by passing a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide at a volume ratio of about 47:53 to 60:40 at a temperature between about 350.degree. to about 450.degree. C. and a pressure of about 200 p.s.i.g. to about 10,000 p.s.i.g. at a volumetric space velocity of about 500 to about 6000 in contact with a sulfur resistant catalyst comprising an interspersed mixture of cobalt oxide, aluminum oxide and zinc oxide. The catalyst comprises about 1 to about 15 weight percent of cobalt oxide, about 15 to about 60 weight percent of aluminum oxide and about 35 to about 70 weight percent of zinc oxide. In preparing the catalyst, the cobalt, aluminum and zinc can be separately precipitated as the corresponding hydroxides and then admixed prior to calcination or two or more of such metals can be coprecipitated as the hydroxides at a controlled pH with ammonium hydroxide from the corresponding aqueous nitrate or acetate solutions. The admixed hydroxides of cobalt, aluminum and zinc are then dried and calcined.
