A carbon fiber which, when baked at a temperature of at least 3,000.degree. C., will have a spread La of graphite crystallites in the layer plane direction of more than 1,000.ANG., an electrical specific resistance of less than 1.1 .mu..OMEGA.m and a thermal conductivity of more than 1,100 W/m.multidot.K.
