ABSTRACT:
A breakaway coupling, a conduit system utilizing the coupling and methods of making the same are provided, the breakaway coupling being adapted to be incorporated into a conduit system and comprising a pair of tubular coupling members each having opposed ends one of which is adapted to be interconnected to a part of the conduit system and the other of which is held in sealing and coupling engagement with the other end of the other coupling member until uncoupled therefrom by a certain axial force being created therebetween, the breakaway coupling having a frangible unit holding the coupling members in their coupled engagement until the certain axial force breaks the frangible unit to thereby uncouple the coupling members, the frangible unit comprising a tubular sleeve unit having opposed ends and an annular frangible section intermediate the ends of the sleeve unit that breaks in an annular manner when the certain axial force is applied between the coupling members.
