ABSTRACT:
A corrosion resistant stainless steel article is provided with a substantly uniform black oxide coating over the surface thereof, the article being formed from a steel alloy in martensitic structure which is treated in a boiling aqueous alkaline-chromate-oxidizing solution containing sodium hydroxide, sodium nitrate and sodium dichromate at a temperature in the range from about 230.degree. F. to about 260.degree. F. for 30 to 60 minutes.
