Bismuth oxyhalide solid solution having the PbFC1 structure and of the formula BiOI.sub.1-x-y Br.sub.x Cl.sub.y wherein x is 0 to about 0.8, y is 0 to about 0.3 and x+y is about 0.1 to about 0.8.
