ABSTRACT:
It is an object of the invention to display white and black colors simultaneously in addition to a color display, in a birefringence control type liquid crystal display device using a high polymer film in optical compensation plate. In the birefringence control type liquid crystal display device using a high polymer film in the optical compensation plate, the product d.DELTA.n of a cell gap d and a refractive index anisotropy .DELTA.n of the liquid crystal cell is set in a range of 1700 nm to 1950 nm, the difference (d.DELTA.n-d.sub.R n.sub.R) of the d.DELTA.n of the liquid crystal cell and the product d.sub.R .DELTA.n.sub.R of a refractive index anisotropy .DELTA.n.sub.R and a film thickness d.sub.R of the phase difference plate is set in a range of 750 nm to 850 nm, the crossing angle of the orientation direction of the upper side of the liquid crystal layer and the slow axis of the phase difference plate is set in a range of 80.degree. to 100.degree., the crossing angle of the absorption axes of the upper and lower polarizers is set in a range of 50.degree. to 70.degree., and the crossing angle of the absorption axis of each polarizer and the orientation direction of liquid crystal molecules adjacent thereto is set in a range of 30.degree. to 50.degree..
