Perylene-3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic acid imides of the general formula I, including their optical antipodes and their mixtures, in particular their racemates ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 to R.sup.14 are identical or different and are hydrogen or a radical selected from the group consisting of an unsubstituted or substituted carbocyclic aromatic radical, an unsubstituted or substituted heterocyclic aromatic radical, halogen, unsubstituted or substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkyl, --OR.sup.15, --CN, --NR.sup.16 R.sup.17, --COR.sup.18, --NR.sup.19 COR.sup.18, --NR.sup.15 COOR.sup.18, --NR.sup.15 CONR.sup.16 R.sup.17, --NHSO.sub.2 R.sup.18, --SO.sub.2 R.sup.18, --SOR.sup.18, --SO.sub.2 OR.sup.18, --CONR.sup.16 R.sup.17 --N.dbd.NR.sup.20, --OCOR.sup.18 and --OCONHR.sup.18, where pairs of adjacent radicals can form a carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring,
