ABSTRACT:
##STR1## The invention provides compounds represented by formula (I) and their salts, wherein R.sup.1 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkylene, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3, which may be the same or different, each represents hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyloxy, amino, mono- or di-C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkylamino (provided that R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 do not represent hydrogen at the same time) or, when taken together, represent C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkylenedioxy, and R.sup.4 represents hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl. Since the compounds react with a carboxylic acid in a short time at room temperature in the presence of a condensing agent to produce amides emitting strong fluorescence, they are useful as reagents for determining the presence of carboxylic acids rapidly with high sensitivity.
