ABSTRACT:
A hand operated rebar bender and bent bar straightener which includes a base, a pair of spaced apart bending posts and a linearly reciprocal slide disposed between the posts and movable reciprocally in directions perpendicular to a line interconnecting the posts. The slide defines a first and second groove, both adapted to receive rebar, which move with the slide. The first groove is positioned so that straight rebar to be bent is originally tangent to the peripheries of the posts. The improvement of the present invention includes mechanical advantage which each movement of the handle moves the slide in increments thus allowing a person of lessor strength to comfortably bend heavy rebar such as #5. Also, a unique automatic or manual reversing mechanism is disclosed which allows the handle to be used in only one direction for straightening rebar as well as bending it.
