A belt transmission apparatus capable of changing a tension of a belt by the action of belt tension adjuster9, 30from a first optimal value of higher tension suitable for the starting of engine1to a second optimal value of lower tension suitable for driving an accessory after engine1has been started. The belt transmission apparatus includes a rotating electric machine pulley8of a rotating electric machine for transmitting starting power to engine1; engine pulley2for transmitting starting power to engine1and rotation power of engine1to accessories; auxiliary pulleys3, 4, 5rotated by the power from engine pulley2to drive the accessories belt10wrapped around rotating electric machine pulley8, engine pulley2and auxiliary pulleys3, 4, 5: and belt tension adjuster9, 30for urging belt10to set tension in a plurality of stages.
