ABSTRACT:
An automatic wire feeding apparatus for an electrodischarge machine has a pipe guide for guiding a wire electrode from a feed roller to wire guides, for insertion through a starting hole in a workpiece. Compressed air fed into the pipe guide forces the wire electrode to vibrate during insertion. A contact detecting circuit detects contact between the wire electrode and the pipe guide. If the contact state continues for a certain time, indicating that insertion is impeded, a control circuit initiates corrective action by stopping the feed roller, cutting the wire electrode, then resuming feeding or by temporarily reversing the feed roller, then resuming forward feeding. Initiation of the corrective action is timed to occur before the wire electrode might ride off the feed roller.
