An automatic document feeder device100has a device body110disposed on a platen210of a document reading device200and pivotably openable relative to the device200by being hingedly connected thereto. The device100includes detectors130, 140for detecting a document-stack state of at least one of a feeder and an output tray111, 112provided on the body110, a driver160for driving the body110to be pivotably opened in an upward direction from the platen210, an instructor179for giving an instruction for the driving, and a controller172for, based on a detection result of the detectors130, 140in priority to the instruction, to permit or forbid the driving, or to control an amount of the driving. When the device body is automatically opened, documents in the feeder or the output tray are unlikely to fall off.
