Arylpolyenecarboxylic acids and their derivatives of the formula I ##STR1## where Ar is phenyl, biphenylyl or naphthyl, each of which can be substituted by one to three C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, hydroxyl or phenoxy groups, or amino groups which can be mono- or di-substituted by C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl groups, or one methylenedioxy group, it being possible for the substituents to be identical or different,
