ABSTRACT:
An arylidene compound is represented by the following formula (I): ##STR1## in which L.sup.1 is a divalent linking group comprising at least one --NH-- and at least one of --CO-- and --SO.sub.2 --; L.sup.2 is monomethine, trimethine or pentamethine; R.sup.1 is an alkyl group, an aryl group or a heterocyclic group; each of R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 independently is hydrogen, an alkyl group or an aryl group, and the number of the total carbon atoms contained in R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 is not more than 20. A silver halide photographic material containing an arylidene dye is also disclosed.
