Functionalized nanoscale carbon fibers and tubes of the formula:wherein Ar is selected from the group consisting of:wherein R is selected from the group consisting of H, H3C—(CH2)n— andwherein n has a value of 0–10. Also provided is a process for functionalizing nanoscale carbon fibers or tubes.
