The new aromatic thermoplastic polyesters and polyester carbonates based on diphenols, dicarboxylic acids, chain terminators and, optionally, branching agents, which are characterized in that the chain terminators correspond to the following formula ##STR1## in which R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 may be the same or different and represent C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkyl or C.sub.8 -C.sub.20 aralkyl and at least one of the substituents R.sub.1 or R.sub.2 is a C.sub.8 -C.sub.20 aralkyl radical and
